OUR FOCUS AREAS
Education equity is important because first generation college students face this entire process alone. Due to language barriers, parents are completely excluded from the application process. This further isolates first gens. Due to the lack of equitable information, students are left with the feeling that a post secondary education is unattainable. Casa Azul includes parents in the college application process by providing bilingual advising services which helps students feel more supported.
The Latinx community living in the rural south have little opportunities to feel connected to their culture and heritage. Being able attain self-love of our complex bicultural identities is only possible when communities have access to cultural programming. Casa Azul creates these spaces so that the youth and the community can connect with their identities and celebrate our cultural wealth.

We recognize the importance of exercising our right to speak up for those in our families that can’t. Our personal lived experiences are the catalyst to activate civically and to create the change we wish to see. We are determined to empower our youth to be advocates for their families as well as build collective power within their communities. Our hope is that with time, Latinx leaders will begin to visualize themselves in positions of power in order to have representation at tables where decisions are made on our behalf
Community Development is our area work that is the most versatile and varies depending on funding. We invest in our community with leadership development opportunities as well as capacity building resources. We are building our base one program or one workshop at a time so that the community not only gets their immediate needs met, but also is empowered to resolve their needs in the future on their own. Ultimately, Casa Azul de Wilson has become a bridge between the community and other resources.
