Poll Safety

The Latinx community of Wilson has zero representation in local government. Furthermore, in the state of North Carolina, there are less than 20 Latinx elected officials even though the Latinx community makes up 10% of the total population.

The elections in 2020 were very tumultuous and impacted our community tremendously. The pandemic, the social unrest, and highly polarized elections cemented the importance of this type of programming in our organization. We continue our work to register people to vote.

There are many reasons as to why the Latinx community does not vote. As we seek to serve our community, we meet our community where they are at and provide the resources they need to feel confident and empowered to make their voices heard.

OUR MAILER CAMPAIGN

In the summer of 2024, Casa Azul de Wilson launched our first mailer campaign, focusing on key issues impacting the Latinx community, such as women’s rights, social justice, economic empowerment, immigration, farmworker rights, and voting power. These mailers were distributed to young voters aged 18 to 29 across five counties: Wilson, Nash, Lenoir, Wayne, and Edgecombe. This demographic represents approximately 45% of registered voters in these areas, making them the largest voting bloc. Each mailer features culturally relevant artwork and presents data in a clear, accessible format, empowering young voters with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions during elections.
